JUSTAS KULIKAUSKAS was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, on April 23, 1990, to Daiva and Edmundas Kulikauskas. He is third – generation cellist who was raised in a house filled with music. His grandfather, Romualdas Kulikauskas, was a professor at Lithuanian Music and Theatre academy and a member of a famous “Lithuanian Quartet”. Father, Edmundas Kulikauskas, is a cello concertmaster in Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, member of a piano trio “Kaskados” and a professor in Lithuania’s music academy.
Justas began playing cello at the age of 4 and showed an immediate aptitude for the instrument. From a young age he started performed solo with a major orchestras in Lithuania: Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra, Kaunas Chamber Orchestra. He is awarded 1st Prize winner at LMTA Competition held to commemorate 90th anniversary of violin professor Aleksandr Livont (Lithuania, 2010), is a prize winner at B. Dvarionas Republic Competition (Lithuania, 2008), awarded 2nd Prize at A. Dombrovski International Competition (Latvia, 2008), and 2nd Prize at The 2nd International Saulius Sondeckis Competition (Lithuania, 2006). In 2010 Justas graduated from the B. Dvarionas Music School, cello class of teacher Tatjana Kuc and in 2014 he earned a bachelor degree at the Lithuanian Academy of Music, LMTA, professor Rimantas Armonas class. In 2011 and 2012 Justas was a participant at David Geringas masterclasses in Usedom festival.
Since 2007 major part of Justas Kulikauskas concert activity consists of performances with New Ideas Chamber Orchestra NICO under the direction of composer Gediminas Gelgotas. NICO is a string ensemble that has developed a new concept of performing; the musicians play all compositions by heart and also integrate minimalistic body movements into their live performances, thus creating a unique concept, which could be called „visualized music”. With NICO he performed in Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Ukraine, Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, New York, Los Angeles and elsewhere.
His solo performance of „Fratres“ (comp. Arvo Part) with NICO was a big success at Usedom Musik Festival (Germany, 2012), recently Justas often performs at the art project for four cellos „Sandglasses“ by a Lithuanian composer J. Janulyte.
Justas has also a special interest in other kind of music – he is a songwriter, producer and artist of Hip-Hop/RnB. In 2013 he released first album with the band called “The Artrace”. In 2014 he started as a solo artist. In 2012 Justas participated at the second “Loop Station World Championship” and was selected as one of eight best loopers in the world. The competition was held in Frankfurt during the famous “Musikmesse” (Germany, 2012).
