New Ideas Chamber Orchestra NICO is a string ensemble known for their captivating and original performances. Playing from memory and mixing classical and pop idioms with non-traditional string instrument techniques the NICO creates sublime, ethereal and energetic musical experience. For those who may think “new music” means something bare and out-of-reach, listening to and watching New Ideas Chamber Orchestra performing Gediminas Gelgotas’ (founding artistic director) luxurious and acclaimed new compositions will transform you into a sophisticated enthusiast. NICO also plays works by Reich, Riley, Glass, Tavener, Pärt, Lauridsen and Hamel, and incorporates some of their own stunning transcriptions of traditional composers (Bach, Vivaldi, etc.) into the performances.
NICO was established in 2006 by one of the most recognised young Baltic composers Gediminas Gelgotas. Acclaimed by audiences and music critics alike, the ensemble is rapidly capturing attention by making their first appearances at the World’s leading concert venues. During the XIIth concert season NICO performed across three continents, including apperances in Los Angeles, Paris, Moscow and Beijing. Their latest recording session in January 2018 took place at the prestigious Real World Studios in United Kingdom.
In 2015, NICO made their debut at the prestigious Gewandhaus concert hall in Leipzig with MDR Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Kristjan Järvi and premiered 1st symphony of Gediminas Gelgotas Extracultural. In 2017 NICO made their debut at London’s St Martin-in-the-Fields and appeared live for Classic FM. Meanwhile, in March BBC cultural correspondent, music and art critic Alexander Kan presented a 10-minute highlight on NICO during a BBC World Service live programme the Fifth Floor, naming them “truly worth attention”. In 2013 NICO album Music for Strings was released by Peermusic Classical, with following albums recorded at the legendary Metropolis Studios in London and Paramount Studios in Los Angeles. The group has performed at numerous other prestigious venues as the Roundhouse and Institute of Contemporary Arts (London), 21er Haus – The Museum of Contemporary Art (Vienna), as well as such high-profile as festivals as the Usedom Music Festival (Germany), Festspillene i Elverum (Norway), Vilnius Festival (Lithuania), Sacrum Non Profanum (Poland) and others, while extensively touring across Europe, Asia and the United States.
